Branding + website project • Winter 2019
Complex branding project for the Water, Peace and Security Partnership (WPS) to launch their new website portal. Water insecurity is increasing worldwide. In response to a range threats the Water, Peace and Security Partnership (WPS) develops innovative tools and services that help identify water-related security risks, and allow stakeholders to take action. On 27th May 2020 Water, Peace and Security was awarded the 2020 Luxembourg Peace Prize for Outstanding Environmental Peace. Photo of drought by R Tee on iStock.

Challenge
When I joined the WPS project there were two key advantages. Firstly, it had established a strong and experienced communications team across all its member organisations. Secondly, the project’s international tool, which uses multiple data sources to flag potential areas of emerging water conflict was live. Even with these early advantages, WPS still needed a bold identity, an intuitive website design and strong social media assets to ensure the project was a success.
Typography
Lato is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed in 2010 for a Polish bank by Łukasz Dziedzic. The word ‘Lato’ means summer in Polish. As of August 2018, Lato is used on more than 9.6 million websites, and is the third most served font on Google Fonts. Lato is available via an open-source license.
Merriweather was designed in 2011 by Eben Sorkin to be a text face that is pleasant to read on screens. It features a very large x height, slightly condensed letterforms, a mild diagonal stress, sturdy serifs and open forms. Merriweather is available via an open source license.
social media assets
Water insecurity is increasing worldwide and about 36% of the world’s population live in water-scarce regions. The WPS website has 27,235 users based in 191 countries as defined in google analytics. During the 3 month period following the launch event, the WPS Twitter account gained over 900 followers and had 81,200 impressions.
“An inspiring and professional portal within which we could be proud to launch the tool at the ministerial conference in Geneva.”
